UDS Finish as Runners-Up in Honda Football Competition After Gallant Final Display
The University for Development Studies (UDS) delivered a spirited performance but narrowly missed out on the ultimate prize, finishing as runners-up in the final of the Honda Football Competition held in Tamale against the University of Ghana (UG).
UDS booked their place in the final after a hard-fought semi-final victory over the Wa-based University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), securing qualification with a decisive lone goal that underscored their determination and tactical discipline.
The final, however, began on an unexpected note. Barely 43 seconds after the referee’s whistle, a determined University of Ghana side broke the deadlock. Their striker, capitalizing on a swift pass from the centre circle, surged forward and calmly slotted the ball past UDS goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo to give UG an early advantage.

Undeterred by the setback, UDS quickly regrouped and asserted control over proceedings, dominating possession and dictating the tempo of the game. Their sustained pressure yielded a crucial opportunity midway through the first half when a dangerous cross into the UG penalty area resulted in a handball by a UG defender. The referee promptly pointed to the spot, presenting UDS with a golden chance to restore parity. However, the ensuing penalty kick was brilliantly saved by the UG goalkeeper, who proved resolute and remained a formidable barrier throughout the match.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession and creating several promising openings, UDS found it difficult to break through a well-organized UG defence that stood firm under relentless pressure.
The second half mirrored the first, with UDS maintaining dominance in midfield and continuing to push forward in search of an equalizer. Yet, a combination of missed chances and disciplined defending by UG ensured that the scoreline remained unchanged.
The narrow defeat marks UDS’ first loss since September 2024, bringing to an end an impressive unbeaten run that had highlighted the team’s consistency and competitive strength.

Although UDS did not clinch the title, their journey to the final and commanding performances throughout the competition reaffirm their status as a formidable force in university sports, both nationally and on the international stage. The team’s resilience, technical quality, and fighting spirit remain a source of pride for the University community.
