UDS Receives 110 MTN Bright Scholarships for 2026/2027 Academic Year

The University for Development Studies (UDS) received 110 MTN Bright Scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year, accounting for 22 per cent of the 500 awards made nationwide. The scholarships were presented at a ceremony on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

The UDS Registrar, Mr. Nurudeen Issah Abubakar, and the Dean of Students, Dr. Haruna Umar, represented the University at the ceremony. UDS is among the institutions whose students benefit from the MTN Ghana Foundation’s flagship scholarship programme. Through the programme, the Foundation supports the University’s efforts to help academically talented students facing financial hardship pursue and complete their studies.

Dr. Umar, who disclosed the University’s share of the awards, said the scholarship eased financial pressures that could interrupt the education of brilliant but needy students. He thanked the MTN Ghana Foundation for its support and urged the beneficiaries to repay its generosity through diligence and excellence in their academic work.

The ceremony featured panel discussions and a keynote address by Mr. Robert Kuzoe of the MTN Ghana Foundation. In his address, Mr. Kuzoe highlighted the programme’s impact and the academic achievements of its beneficiaries. He said the initiative had supported 1,220 students since its launch in 2018, with 199 beneficiaries graduating with first-class honours and 17 earning overall best student distinctions. He also stressed the value of supporting teachers to upgrade their skills and bring that expertise into the classroom.

Of the 500 awards in the current round, 300 went to tertiary students pursuing programmes in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), or in technical and vocational fields. The other 200 went to teachers pursuing degrees in related disciplines. The scholarship covers tuition and accommodation and provides a laptop and a stipend for reading materials, helping beneficiaries meet costs that can determine whether they are able to stay in school.
