MTN Foundation to Construct $615,000 Multi-Purpose Student Resource Centre at UDS

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is set to benefit from a major investment in digital education and student welfare, as the MTN Ghana Foundation has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose Student Resource Centre at the Dungu Campus in Tamale.

The project, estimated at $615,000, follows the approval of a proposal submitted by the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Alhassan Musah, to the Foundation. The Centre is expected to revolutionize learning and student life by enhancing digital literacy, STEM, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) education, while also providing a conducive environment for social interaction and innovation.

According to the Foundation, the sod-cutting ceremony has been scheduled for the last week of September 2025. In addition, the Foundation will organize a Digital Skills Academy a day prior to the ceremony, encouraging all Level 100 students to enrol and complete a training module. “This initiative,” the Foundation noted, “will equip students with essential digital skills for the new bold and brighter world.”

Features of the Resource Centre

The single-storey Student Resource Centre will be equipped with:

  1. An integrated ICT and digital skills hub fitted with world-class technology
  2. Training facilities in AI, Robotics, Blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT)
  3. A Conference and Innovation Centre to foster in-person interactions with industry experts
  4. A snack bar and relaxation space for students
  5. Eight modern washrooms, including facilities dedicated to persons with disability

Speaking on the significance of the project, Prof. Alhassan Musah, Dean of Students Affairs, explained that the facility was born out of a clear need to bridge the gap between theory and practice in higher education.

“In keeping with our mandate, this Centre will offer a great pathway to equip our graduates with the skills and competences necessary for the fast-changing job market,” he said. “It will transform our students from mere information consumers to creative problem solvers and innovators. Beyond that, it will provide a welcoming outlet for students to interact, socialize, and build strong networks for the future.”

Prof. Musah also expressed gratitude to the MTN Foundation, describing the project as a timely intervention that will redefine digital education at UDS.

During the 2025 Convocation meeting the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Prof. Seidu Al-hassan, also commended the MTN Foundation for its continued support of higher education in Ghana.

“This project is not just about putting up a building; it is about opening a new chapter for our students in the fields of digital literacy, innovation, and research,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. “We deeply appreciate MTN Foundation’s investment in our students’ future, and we assure the Foundation that the Centre will be fully mainstreamed into the University’s operations to guarantee its sustainability.”

It would be recalled that at an earlier occasion, Prof. Al-Hassan had publicly expressed his profound gratitude to the MTN Foundation, describing it as “a true partner in the University’s pursuit of academic excellence and innovation.”

The MTN Ghana Foundation has over the years contributed immensely to Ghana’s development, particularly in health, education, and economic empowerment. In education, the Foundation has supported the construction of libraries, ICT centres, and school blocks across the country, while offering scholarships to hundreds of brilliant but needy students.

With this new partnership, UDS joins the long list of beneficiaries of MTN Foundation’s vision of empowering communities and shaping Ghana’s future through sustainable investments.
