UDS Consolidates Leadership at Ghana Institution of Horticulturists as Presidency Remains with University
The University for Development Studies (UDS) has once again demonstrated institutional leadership and influence within Ghana’s academic and professional landscape as the presidency of the Ghana Institution of Horticulturists (GhIH) remains firmly in the hands of the University.
At the 25th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the GhIH, held in a ceremony marked by reflection, continuity and renewed commitment, the outgoing President, Prof. Abdul Halim Abubakari, officially handed over the mantle of leadership to another UDS academic, Dr. Mohammed Mujitaba Dawuda. Prof. Abubakari is a former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Sciences at UDS.
The transition, which drew members of the Institution from academia, government agencies and allied professional bodies, underscored UDS’ sustained contribution to horticultural development and leadership in Ghana.
In his farewell address, Prof. Abubakari expressed gratitude to members of the Institution for the confidence reposed in him throughout his tenure, describing his period as President as both “challenging and deeply fulfilling.”
“It has been an honour to serve the Ghana Institution of Horticulturists at a time when horticulture is increasingly central to food security, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods,” he said. “I am particularly proud of the collective efforts we made to strengthen professional collaboration, deepen advocacy and enhance the visibility of horticulture in national discourse.”
He urged the new leadership to build on the gains made, stressing the need for unity and innovation within the Institution.
“Leadership is a relay, not a solo race. I am confident that the baton is being handed to capable hands, and I pledge my continued support to the new executive,” Prof. Abubakari added.

Following the formal swearing-in ceremony, Dr. Mohammed Mujitaba Dawuda, who also lectures at UDS, described his election as a call to service and a collective responsibility rather than a personal achievement.
“I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep sense of duty,” Dr. Dawuda stated. “This is not about one individual, but about a shared vision to reposition horticulture as a key driver of national development, youth employment and environmental sustainability.”
He further emphasized collaboration, professional development and policy engagement as key priorities of his administration.
“Together with my executive, we will work to strengthen partnerships with state institutions, research bodies and the private sector, while ensuring that the Ghana Institution of Horticulturists remains relevant, vibrant and impactful,” he said.

The newly inaugurated executive body is made up of Dr. Mohammed Mujitaba Dawuda (UDS) as President; Dr. Daniel Akakpo of the University of Ghana as Vice President; Mr. Edem K. Doe of the Parks and Gardens Department and the Jubilee House as Honorary Secretary; and Ms. Christiana Abena Dentaa of the National Sports Council as Treasurer.
The successful transition, which has resulted in successive presidents emerging from UDS, highlights the University’s growing stature and leadership in agricultural science and professional practice in Ghana.
For many observers, it is a clear signal that UDS continues to play a pivotal role in shaping national conversations and professional standards in horticulture and beyond.
