UDS Hosts 34th Biennial Conference of The Ghana Science Association
The University for Development Studies (UDS) hosted the 34th Biennial Conference of the Ghana Science Association (GSA), a three-day event which officially opened on Wednesday, October 23, 2025, at the Dr. Andani Andan Academic Board Chamber, Tamale Campus.
The biennial conference, held under the theme “Leveraging Innovative Science to Strengthen Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for Sustainable Development in Ghana,” brought together scientists, researchers, industry leaders and policymakers to explore how science and technology can serve as catalysts for national transformation.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Mohmmed Muniru Iddrisu, Principal of the Nyankpala Campus on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan. He commended the Association and its partners for sustaining such a significant intellectual platform over the years. He highlighted UDS’s commitment to advancing science-driven development, citing the University’s research and innovative achievements and collaborative projects as contributions to addressing societal challenges.

Delivering his address, the National President of the GSA, Professor Gideon Kofi Helegbe, who was duly represented by Dr. Francis Addy, Honorary Secretary of GSA outlined the Association’s milestones and emphasized that this year’s conference seeks to break new ground. Unlike previous years where proceedings ended with a communique, the 2025 conference will produce and promote actionable policy briefs on its thematic areas. These briefs, he explained, are designed to support the Government’s RESET GHANA agenda by bridging the gap between research and policy implementation through effective public privat partnerships.

Dr. Addy also lauded government’s establishment of the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), describing it as a timely intervention to drive innovation and research. “As the largest association of scientists, engineers, mathematicians and technicians in Ghana, we are excited about the birth of the Ghana Research Fund. Science drives the world, and the Research Fund is the lifeline government can give to scientific advancement in Ghana. I therefore urge government to allocate sufficient resources to ensure its sustainability.” he stated.
Representing the keynote speaker, Hon. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, was Hon. Shemima Muslim, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, who underscored government’s commitment to harnessing science and innovation as tools for national transformation. She reiterated the need for closer collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers to ensure research outcomes translate into practical solutions that benefit society.

The three-day conference, running from October 23 to 25, 2025, featured plenary sessions, paper presentations and panel discussions that delved into the role of innovative science in fostering stronger public-private partnerships for sustainable development.
For UDS, hosting this prestigious gathering not only affirms its position as a hub for applied research and innovation but also reflects the University’s mandate of bridging academia with industry and government in addressing Ghana’s developmental priorities.
